Permitted Development Changes


The "Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development)(Amendment)(No.2)(England) Order 2008", which came into force on 1 October 2008, changed the existing legislation affecting permitted development, including the following areas:

  • Restrictions on Principal and Side Elevations

  • Restrictions on Side-facing Windows

  • Restrictions on Outbuildings

  • Paving of Front Gardens

  • Roof Alterations

  • Solar Panels

  • Chimneys, Flues and Soil and Vent Pipes

  • World Heritage Sites

How do I find out if I need planning permission?

Guildford Borough Council has helpdesk staff, administrative staff and duty planning officers who can give general advice over the counter or on the phone. Please write or email them about a particular site or property, for example:

Planning Enforcement

In the United Kingdom, planning laws are used to control development of our urban and rural environments.

Guildford Borough Council has a planning enforcement team who are committed to protecting the character of the borough. This team of officers investigate situations where they suspect there is a breach of planning control.

A breach of planning control occurs when somebody is developing a site without the planning permission they need, or they are not meeting the terms or conditions of a planning permission.
